New Polymer-class Discovery Defies Age-old Polymer Chemistry Textbooks

Defying the age-old polymer chemistry textbooks, the UD researchers have come up with a new class of ultra-thin polymer films. The films have potential applications that range from coating tiny microelectronic devices to plastic solar cells.
Focusing on formerly nonpolymerizable ethylenes, the research also used several natural source-derived compounds — like cinnamon, and those which are FDA-approved for use in fragrances and foods. According to the scientists, one of these compounds is found in milkshakes.
Snively, a research associate in Lauterbach’s laboratory group noted,
There’s been a rule that these molecules wouldn’t polymerize. When I first saw that in a textbook when I was in graduate school, I said to myself, ‘Don’t tell me I can’t do this.
And thus, this discovery is the beginning of disproving the widely accepted — scientific rule of thumb.
The Nov. 28 edition of Macromolecules — a scientific journal published by the American Chemical Society — has reported this discovery as a “communication to the editor”.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a letter to the famous pet food production unit Iams, warning about a specific additive in some of its products for fat dogs and cats.
The letter said that several Eukanuba-brand dry and canned pet food products made by The Iams Company that is a unit of Procter & Gamble Co. (Charts) contain chromium tripicolinate. Chromium tripicolinate is only allowed as a source of supplemental chromium in swine feed actually.
The company said that it will take chromium tripicolinate out from the future formulations of its Eukanuba Veterinary Diets Optimum Weight Control and Restricted-Calorie dry and canned products. The FDA, till now, had not ordered any recall of the products yet. According to the FDA, genotoxic compounds can cause genetic mutations or tumors. FDA has asked Iams to respond within 15 days of receiving the letter with documentation of its corrective actions. However, the company did not mention a specific date by which the compound - which still is being listed as an ingredient on the Iams Web site - would be removed.
